On July 1, 1940, the unit was redesigned the 17th Cavalry Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 17th Cavalry consolidated in March 1951 with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 17th Armored Cavalry Group. The remaining Troops of the unit were concurrently disbanded.
In May, 1959 the unit was redesigned as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 17th Cavalry, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System.
